Movies: Ghostbusters (2016) (12A), Star Trek: Beyond (12A), The BFG (PG) & X-Men: First Class (DVD – 12)

Ghostbusters (2016) (12A) – what’s it about? Ghosts invade Manhattan and a group of scientist’s team up to battle against the spooks.

Ok so I expected this film to basically be shite as I don’t think I like any film McCarthy has been in so much so I basically avoid watching anything she’s in…but this is Ghostbusters…Ghostbusters so I had to watch it! How annoying was this movie on the scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the most annoying thing in existence and 1 being not annoying at all, probably about a 7. The characters were all pretty annoying, the plot was alright…it could have been way better if they had just made them a new set of Ghostbusters years later and not rebooted the series completely. Anyway yeah, I have to admit there were a couple of bits in this that did have me in stitches but I don’t think it has any re-watch factor like the old ones. I don’t know…it was a balance of good and bad ugh.

Star Trek: Beyond (12A) – what’s it about? The crew must survive their encounter with a hostile race on a distant planet.

Set phasers to stun! pew pew pew. This is the third in the series of Star Trek reboot movies and I expect by now you’ve probably seen them and you’ve made up your mind to if you love or hate them. For the haters don’t bother as I’m pretty sure this movie won’t change your mind on loving it, but for the lovers as you’ve enjoyed the rest of the movies then I would totally stop what you are doing and go and watch this asap! I don’t want to give too much away but let’s just say it continues the story well, has all the good special effects and action. I think it also gives Star Trek fans a bit more of a classic Star Trek feel, at points in this movie it was like a flash back to old school Star Trek and it was goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood.

The BFG (PG) – what’s it about? Sophie is taken into the world of giants after she sees the BFG; she learns he’s really a big softie and the pair become friends.

This is an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel, I remember reading this as a kid and loving it so I thought I’d have to go and see it for memories sake. I think they done this really well, the characters were spot on, yeah it’s a good take on the story and worth a look if you like the adventure and fantasy this one brings…oh yeah and there’s some good humour thrown in too (all I'll say is the corgis lol).

X-Men: First Class (DVD – 12) – what’s it about? Set in 1962 Charles Xavier teams up a band of mutants that are destined to become the X-Men.

I really thought I’d already done a review of this one so my bad for not. So this movie goes back and covers the story of the origin of the X-Men and the Brotherhood which begins the re-boot part of the franchise. I really like the X-Men but I’m not too fond of movies set in the past (they usually bore me to death); that said though it works well with the X-Men. This one manages to give a bit of depth to the characters and how they all came together. Yeah it’s got what you want from an X-Men movie, story, character stuff, action and well cool ass mutants! *must resist the urge to paint myself blue again, must resist*.

Movies: The Legend of Tarzan (12A), Now You See Me 2 (12A), Transformers: Dark of the Moon (DVD – 12), Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End (DVD – 12) & Meet the Parents (DVD – 12)

The Legend of Tarzan (12A) – what’s it about? Tarzan is called back to the jungle to try to stop the Belgians from taking control and destroying his world.

I like the story of Tarzan, this one though is not about him and Jane when they first meet in the jungle but is the later story of once he returns to London and then his return home to the jungle. It is really well done; it has a good mix of story and a good bit of action and adventure. I wouldn’t say this is the best movie ever but it’s pretty good and worth a watch, though I wouldn’t bother with the 3D.

Now You See Me 2 (12A) – what’s it about? The Four Horseman re-appear and set out to reveal more secrets to the world.

So this is a follow on from Now You See Me and well what to say about it, it’s a really interesting movie and concept and you know the first one was pretty damn good and this one is more of the same. Sadly to me though it didn’t wow, it was good and interesting don’t get me wrong as it had some really good bits in it but I wouldn’t say this was an amazing film, its above average really but yeah that’s about it sadly.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (DVD – 12) – what’s it about? A space ship from Cybertron is discovered on the moon and the Autobots fight it out with the Decepticons.

More giant robots fighting it out in the third movie in the series – so by now if you’ve watched all the others you really know what to expect. I’d say there’s nothing really spectacular about this movie as it’s kind of just more of the same but that said it’s still a brilliant movie as they’ve figured out what makes it fun by now so keep getting it right! It’s a good bit of entertainment as it’s got some great action and scenes in it as well as the usual style of humour. Yeah basically if you’ve seen the others and liked them then watch this one.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End (DVD – 12) – what’s it about? The crew travel to the edge of the world to bring back Captain Jack.

Another pirate adventure with the gang, you completely know what to expect with these swashbuckling adventures by now, pirates, fighting, humour and well all out scallywagness. The usual thought though of if you’ve seen the previous ones then you’ll no doubt enjoy this one. I have to say re-watching them all close together has been really enjoyable!

Meet the Parents (DVD – 12) – what’s it about? Greg and his girlfriend head to her parents’ house for the weekend, where Greg gets to meet the parents for the first time!

This is a weird film in that it’s kind of people’s fears rolled into one when you have to meet your partner’s parents for the first time (you know you’ve been there), even though you know it’d never be this much of a disaster it’s still like an ahhhhh moment. This movie does the comedy of this very well, even though some of it is a bit cringe worthy, it has some good funny moments, it’s not crude or over the top shouting or swearing like most of the modern day comedies but is a random mix of amusing disasters. It’s one to give you a chuckle!
