Movies: Earth to Echo (PG), Hercules (12A), The Purge: Anarchy (15), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (12A) and Odd Thomas (DVD – 15)

Earth to Echo (PG) – what’s it about? A town’s folk are being relocated due to the building of a motorway – strange things start to happen and a group of young lads set out on a journey on their last night together where they discover an extraterrestrial friend in the process!

Very cute – and funny – I found it pretty funny anyway – the kids do stuff that you kind of did or would have done in the situations – it’s a really nice family film – and it has an alien – so all good there...kinda like an ET story really.

Rating: J J J

Hercules (12A) – what’s it about? Hercules the demigod has completed his 12 labours and become a mercenary with the assistance of a group of warriors – he is hired by the king of Thrace to defeat a tyrant (no not that kind of Tyrant :P)…

If you want to look at lovely buff men in skimpy clothing then you’ll be highly disappointed – if you though however want to see more of the logical reasoning behind the Hercules myth – and lots of (moderate) killing and violence then you’ll like this one…

The Purge: Anarchy (15) – what’s it about? The annual Purge takes place – and people begin to question the government and the Purge itself…the story follows a group of individuals…can they survive the night?

Are you feeling cleansed? More killing and surviving and violence and people running for their lives – the Purge is awesome – it’s not extreme grossness but a nice helping if survival horror – I like the Purge…Purging is fun…but being Purged is not so much!

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (12A) – what’s it about? A continuation from Rise of the Planet of the Apes – humanity is near extinction – the intelligent apes have taken up residence – the humans set out to work with them to ensure their own survival but will the whole thing end in war???…

More apes and story and stuff like that – I was thinking in this man these movies are stupid – they’re about apes taking over the world – but if you shed reality for a bit then it’s good – good continuation and gap filling to the story – with a nice sized handful of action thrown in – gives this one a nice stirred in mix…it’s just like a cake…with added ape fur…

Odd Thomas (DVD – 15) – what’s it about? Odd by name and odd by nature – he can see dead people and does something about it – he stops the baddies and all that jazz – but with the increase of lurking creatures – he knows something big is going to down – can he figure out what it is and stop it from happening???…

This is pretty cool – dude it’s like as funny as crazy people in a nuthouse – a good mix of story – odd plot and weird stuff happening. I like it – one of those random surprising movies that you don’t expect to be any good but it turns out to be a bloody goldmine! What more can I say without spoiling it – just its good – so go check it!

Fandom: Hyper Japan – 27 Jul 2014

On Sun 27 Jul 14 – I went up to Earls Court London to check out the Hyper Japan convention – which is a Japanese culture event. It features everything from anime, manga, music, clothing, food, cosplay, games and cool stuff like that.

The event itself was well organised – queue wise etc – well laid out – and very spacious…really well planned and organised…though I did go on the Sunday which was less chaotic than the Saturday apparently…the thing that put me off on the Saturday was that everyone was kicked out of the event for two hours over lunch time…which seemed a little meh to me.

I didn’t really get chance to look at the stalls and stuff too much though – but from what I saw the things you could buy were very cool. The music they had going on was absolutely great – there was a really interesting talk on robotics I listened too…and one on Japanese wrestling which was a little strange lol.

The main thing I went for was the cosplay (and to see friends) there were some absolutely fantastic costumes – and I met some really awesome and friendly people – such a great community! There were two cosplay stage performance/shows – one was an international competition – and the other was an event parade…it was a good couple of hours of seeing people do some great skits – in awesome costumes!

…I hung out with Marmite_666 who made an awesome Prophet cosplay and we had a bit of a scuffle...

...and yes I had great fun scaring the hell out of people in and around London lol...

If you’re into Japanese culture – or just fancy and different day out – then I’d recommend attending this event – it’s not too extortionate (though the food is a bit pricey) – and it is a fun day for all the family...

Movies: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (12A) & Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (12A)

Rise of the Planet of the Apes – what’s it about? The prequel movie that explains the rise of the intelligent apes from the Planet of the Apes movies…

This does a pretty good job in explaining how the apes become well – intelligent…well kinda…good lead in movie…though it is pretty slow but you know it explains rather than does. It has Dick Solomon (John Lithgow) and Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) in it so you know - win situation there...if you don't know who they are then shame on you!!! It’s a good movie to watch – if you like the other movies that is…if not then probably avoid.

Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life – what’s it about? Lara Crofts adventures continue in this sequel as she tries to stop some baddies from getting hold of Pandora’s box!

Cheesey – cheesy lines and cheesy action - so cheesey as hell lol – if you like Lara Croft – women in tight fitting clothing with big boobs that take on action with guns and violence and all that jazz – then you’ll love this sequel. If you’ve seen the first movie you know what to expect really! But you know this Lara is still not as cool as young Lara though :P

Movies: Da Vinci Code (12A) & Begin Again (15)

Da Vinci Code – what’s it about? A murder leads Robert and Sophie to the discovery of a religious mystery – can they solve it whilst being hunted by a secret society of crazy ass monks…

This is still a pretty good story – mixture of you know stuff – mystery – little bit of actiony type bits – dectectiveness – and character driven blurb…worth a look if you like to watch a mystery unravel and be solved…it is pretty hard going in parts and pretty long though…can’t really say much without spoiling much on this one…so not gonna…

Begin Again – what’s it about? By chance a young unknown songwriter meets a washed up record executive – together they being a wonderful music journey of friendship and album creation…

This was one of those – I have no idea what it is but I’ll go see it cuz a mate wants to…girls night out at the ‘ma lol. I came out of this one – really – really pleasantly surprised! It has lots of music – songs (I love music) in – bit of a love story going on – just an all around enjoyable movie. If you’re a girl you’d love this (probably) or if you love music – the same goes…if you’re a teenage boy or what not this will probably be your worst nightmare…but don’t worry you don’t actually need the vom bucket…

Movies: Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (PG), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (PG) and Transformers: Age of Extinction (12A)

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children – what’s it about? Cloud is forced out of isolation when three men kidnap and brainwash the children of the city…

Yeah this was pretty good – though I’m not a FF fan – it was still enjoyable – the graphics are still nice and the story is good – though it can be a little confusing…still worth watching though if you like anime stylie…

Rating: J J J

How to Train Your Dragon 2 – what’s it about? Hiccup and Toothless discover a home of dragons protected by a mysterious woman…can they unite and try to stop an evil warlord from enslaving all the dragons…

Really what can I say? If you loved Hiccup and his friend’s adventures in the first movie – then you’ll love this one too! The story is fun – interesting characters – it has laughs – but some sad moments too…check it if you like some dragonness…

Transformers: Age of Extinction – What’s it about? A mechanic and his family are pulled into the battle between the Autobots, humanity and a group of robotic bounty hunters – can they save the Autobots and the world at the same time?...

Yeah more Transformers – giant robots and action – yeah awesomeness – though to me it did seem a little long…it was a great mix – and you know what to expect if you like the previous ones – though it was a little odd without the actors from the previous ones in it – but it still worked…
